James Bond as an Allusion
James Bond is a secret agent, otherwise known as 007. The book popular
series was written by Ian Flemming and the stories have very successful films
made as well. He is a man licensed to kill inferred by the “double oh” in his
agent tag. His enemies were always trying to figure out ways to kill him off,
but he always found a way out of dangerous situations. Ironically he likes to
drink and some enemies of his tried to poison him with putting drugs in his
drinks. James also has a liking for beautiful women and fast cars he always encounters throughout the stories.
Gadgets are also a big perk with Bond as he always has something to help him
with his missions or get out of trouble. An example as an allusion to James Bond
is found in Christopher J. Koch’s The
Year of Living Dangerously, in which he writes, “He was still lightheaded,
and grew more so as he sipped his Bintang. Then he realized, he said, that she
had managed to put something in his beer: some drug. I laughed at this. Too much
James Bond, I suggested.” (qtd. In Delahunty, Dignen, and Stock 7). The phrase
is an allusion to James Bond because the man drinking was suspicious of a drug
in his drink, and that how James Bond is in the novels and films. James, like
this man in the allusion is on the lookout constantly for anything that doesn’t
seem right.
