Man Destroying Mother Earth
Around the globe talks of the climate change are at an alarming rate. This is due to
the earth’s atmosphere being too polluted. From the pollution climates across
the world are fluctuating constantly. People wonder how this is happening and
the answer is pointed at us humans. I believe, it is a man-made problem that
everyone as a whole needs to realize and take action toward the problem at
hand.
Scientists today have been figuring out the problems created by man that
is disturbing earth’s climates, sea levels and atmosphere. What they have
discovered is fossil fuels are making these climates change and are polluting
the atmosphere. Fossil fuels are the biggest energy provider in the world. This
energy from fossil fuels is giving off what is called greenhouse gases (GHGs),
methane, but mostly carbon dioxide (CO2). These gases are the reason to why the
climates are changing, sea levels rising, heat waves, and other natural
disasters caused by greenhouse gases. In a report in 2007 by the U.N. climate
panel to 200 nations in Qatar it was stated “The probability that human activity
was the main cause is at least 90 percent” – Rajendra Pachauri spokesman for
U.N. climate panel. However he expects this percentage to increase more
significantly by the next report due in 2013. Rajendra also told the nations
present that a deal has to be made to cut greenhouse emissions to steer clear of
floods, heat waves, droughts, and rising sea levels. These of which can be
proven catastrophic if this crisis are not dealt with right
away.
One problem in particular due to the climate changes is raising sea
levels. These especially dangerous too cities and other places in low-lying
areas around the world. This can cause flooding or in a worse case swamping and
erosion of large areas of land. The U.N.’s climate panel also stated that sea
levels could raise 7-24in by the year 2100. This is also without the added
acceleration from Antarctica and Greenland’s ice caps melting. So therefore sea
levels can be getting dangerously high in years to come.
Countries in U.N. were asked to cut emissions of greenhouse
gases by 5.2% which is lower than in 1990. This will help reduce the climate
changes, but when asked these countries such as China and Russia backed out
saying that developing countries and advancing technology is more important. I
believe that it is not more important than saving the earth and the future
generations to come from catastrophes that will occur if this problem is not
dealt with immediately.
The world has to do something about this and finally now it
seems that most countries are coming to their senses realizing that global
climate change is the biggest issue. However without the emissions cut in effect
these climate changes will keep occurring and rise temperatures. A study by the
U.N. climate panel showed that the planet can’t go 4C higher. If so it could be
the difference of our climate today and that of the ice age thousands of years
ago. So I think it will be ignorant of people around the world as a whole to
ignore are consequences to our actions revolving the man-made climate change.
People who believe that it is not man-made need a self-check. An
issue “global warming” is caused from the polluted atmosphere created by are
fossil fuels and other fumes giving off carbon dioxide. This is causing the ice
to melt which now cannot reflect heat from the sun. Without being able to
reflect it those cold parts of the earth such as Antarctica can’t stay cool and
therefore melt. It’s not just causing the ice to melt either animals that live
there are also affected by this and in some cases some are dying off or forced
to move. Scientists use to think that Antarctica’s ice would melt away over a
century of summers. Now it’s being argued that it could happen within a decade
if the use of polluting fumes are continued to be used and not decreased.
This is all due to human arrogance; it is like we think we are
the only living thing that matters when in fact everything living as a whole
plays a role into our earth surviving. This statement “As the world has warmed
in the past decades, the winter refreeze has stopped compensating for the summer
melt. Heat-reflecting white ice has given way to heat-absorbing dark water; snow
has melted ever earlier on surrounding lands; more heat-trapping moisture has
entered the atmosphere; and bigger waves and storms have assailed weakening ice.
Thanks to these feedback processes, the Arctic has begun to warm twice as fast
as any other region on the planet." – (Michael Le Page) Intergovernmental Panel
on climate change show what is happening and if not stopped by everyone
stepping in around the globe can show very high risks in the future. This is
the most important than any other problem surfacing in the world today. It is
my opinion however this is a situation that can decide earth’s survival or its
ultimate end, including human kind’s expiration. Making this earth ecofriendly
is the answer, cleaning up the mess we made is our duty. If not it is like not
cleaning up a wine spill right away, the damage is permanent.
